Sunday was our first exposure to a hospital. Kasum met up with us in the morning and we all drove together to a local teaching hospital in Kathmandu. We were all surprised by the amount of people in the hospital. The hallways were overflowing with patients.
We met several different OB/GYNs and a couple other clinical staff members as we went through the labor and delivery ward, the anti-natal care area, and the recovery area in the hospital. We are all very excited to spend time there next week.
We were unable to stay there, so after Kasum dropped us off we walked home and then went out and got some Tibetan lunch. Jenny tried some Tibetan tea, which after one sip we determined to be melted yak butter. We all enjoyed the lunch very much. The Tibetan tea did not get finished.
After lunch we spent some time shoe shopping, because apparently we need "slippers" for our work in the hospitals, which pretty much just means special hospital shoes that you can slip on and off. When we finally found some shoes (Julia got awesome purple flower ones) we went yak scarf shopping. When we got back to the hotel we spent some time reading and then went to the Garden of Dreams just as it started raining. We spent a while there, sitting at a cafe enjoying snacks as it poured. We walked around the garden and then, a bit damp, walked home. We met up later, after packing, to figure out dinner. We went to dinner at a local Indian restaurant called the Third Eye. While the prices were a bit higher ($4 instead of $2) the ambiance was beautiful. We sat on the floor and enjoyed mango chutney and peanuts.
